and Tom Dale - T02001991956This special programme commemorates the onset of World War I with a composition by James Redwood with choreography by Tom Dale. Dark Clouds are Smouldering into Red tells the story of a young couple torn apart by conflict and explores the themes of separation, loss and social upheaval. George Butterworth's Two English Idylls were composed in 1910-11, poignant reminders of his promise as a composer killed in action in the battle of the Somme in 1916.

T0418678301France meets Austria in this programme from sinfonia ViVA, beginning with Faure’s Masques and Bergamasques, his affectionate homage to the amateur dramatics of 18th-century French aristocrats. Mozart wrote his 4th horn concerto for Joseph Leutgeb, whose virtuosity prompted its winning blend of high-flying pyrotechnics and smooth refinement. The French horn also stars in Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess, a tender vision of a young Spanish princess and her courtly world centuries earlier. The great conductor Hans Richter declared the 3rd symphony to be Brahms’s ‘Eroica’ and it’s certainly one of the richest and most poetic of his works. Besides the composer’s broad melodies, thrillingly announced at the beginning in sweeping arcs, there’s a powerful rhythmic thrust and, at its heart, a pastoral slow movement that’s as beautiful as anything Brahms ever wrote.Conductor Andre de Ridder. Performer Johannes Hinterholzer (French horn).

T0432752329Principal Conductor Andre de Ridder and sinfonia ViVA return to Chelmsford with a sparkling selection of classics performed by an orchestra of nearly 50 players. The concert opens with Schumann's Symphony in G minor. This is followed by Stravinsky's surprisingly lyrical Pulcinella Suite. Taken from the ballet he wrote for Diaghilev this is an early example of neoclassicism from Stravinsky. Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, depicts the composer's love for and appreciation of the landscape and the forces of nature. We are taken from the serenity of a gently depicted country scene to the unleashing of a full-blown storm before a resolution in the form of the thanksgiving song of shepherds. A truly timeless piece.Conductor Andre de Ridder.

T2019974491Schumann left his first attempt at a symphony unfinished. After the two completed movements were unsuccessfully performed in his home town of Zwickau, he put it aside, and it was not heard again until the 1970s. But as recent performances and recordings show, it’s not just a curiosity - it’s a fine piece, full of attractive music. Scottish composer Anna Meredith hit the headlines with her work Froms, composed for the Last Night of the Proms, 2008. Since January 2010 she has been working with sinfonia ViVA as their Composer in the House which is a Royal Philharmonic Society and PRS for Music Foundation initiative.Conductor Andre de Ridder.

Floratorio - T1901641525Floratorio celebrates the life of Florence Nightingale in the 100th anniversary year of her death. Nationally acclaimed composer James Redwood leads a team of sinfonia ViVA musicians in four local schools to create a series of new songs inspired by the life of the famous ‘Lady with the Lamp’. 180 young people will perform this major new oratorio incorporating their own compositions. Peter Roberts and James Redwood have been commissioned to write Floratorio following great success with More Glass Than Wall. The work will be premiered by the massed choir, vocal soloists and sinfonia ViVA in the culmination performance.

Now and Then - T1506463648sinfonia ViVA return to Curve with their Principal Conductor André de Ridder and a time-travelling programme of contrasts. Included is a rare opportunity to hear the ‘jewel’ that is Barber’s Adagio for Strings set in the context of the whole work, the String Quartet No.1 in its version for string orchestra. The interesting melodies of Anna Meredith’s Songs for the M8 inject their own fresh dynamic. Glass’s Symphony No.3 emphasises the players as soloists in a composition where he came closer to 'traditional' symphonic form than ever before. And there’s the gravity of Beethoven’s astonishing and dramatic Grosse Fugue.

T01561172641Two little-known works by two well-known composers. Prize-winning Russian-born violinist Ilya Gringolts is the soloist in one of Schumann’s very last compositions. Neglected after his death, it has recently been receiving more attention. Brahms’s Serenade No 1 is his very first work for orchestra, based on an earlier version for an ensemble of just nine instruments. Its youthful charm and exuberance may surprise those who think of Brahms as always heavy and serious. One of Viva’s newly-commissioned Orchestral Shorts opens the concert.Conductor Andre de Ridder. T01377819366A rare opportunity to hear a performance of Hans Werner Henze’s Double Concerto for Oboe and Harp written in 1966 for the virtuoso soloists Heinz and Ursula Holliger. Mendelssohn’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion in 1829 brought about a revival of Bach’s music after an absence of almost 100 years. His interest in studying earlier models, most particularly contrapuntal writing, is evident in the 11th string symphony, completed in 1823.Conductor Andre de Ridder. Performer Nicholas Daniel (oboe).
