Great Romantics - T1763383224

One of the great Romantic symphonies and a cornerstone of Russian music, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5 presents the ultimate journey from darkness to light with a triumphant conclusion. The use of the recurring Fate theme as an emotional core, though common for the composer, paints new orchestral colours in each movement with intensity and purpose. Its frequent use hints also at a deep anxiety that plagued the composer, underlying even when the sullen fourth movement is broken by a glorious E major finale. Brahms' Double Concerto written for violin, cello and orchestra makes for an exquisite first half with RPO Leader Duncan Riddell and Principal Cello Richard Harwood. A masterpiece of virtuosic writing and instrumentation, Brahms' last orchestral work set new boundaries for the possibilities of the concerto form.

with Martin Roscoe - T0954897975

Bursting brass at a galloping pace proclaims the opening of Rossini's William Tell Overture and the beginning of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's spring concert, led by conductor, Christian Kluxen. Joining the Orchestra for Mendelssohn's virtuosic Piano Concerto No.1 is "a refined pianist with the wisdom of experience" (Gramophone Magazine), Martin Roscoe. Opening with breathless urgency, Mendelssohns' light and joy filled piano concerto is almost improvisatory in its speed and excitement. Close the programme is Tchaikovsky's towering masterpiece, his Symphony No.6 'Pathetique'. Perhaps one of the most personal scores that the composer ever wrote, the piece is etched with heart-breaking intensity and was intended to be his own requiem.

T416923604

Conductor Alexander Shelley, a frequent guest conductor with London orchestras, joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Hull City Hall for the second concert of its 2014-15 concert series. Versatile Italian pianist Alessio Bax, who is no stranger to Beethoven piano works, performs Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto. This all-Beethoven programme opens with the dramatic Coriolan Overture. Based on the tale of banished Coriolanus, the Overture captures a series of stormy episodes. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5 (nicknamed the 'Emperor' by audiences), written only a few years after the suspenseful Overture, is one of the most energetic - and yet moving - piano masterpieces of its time, with beautiful melodies, varied textures and sheer flamboyance. The composer's emphatic Symphony No.5, completed three years before the 'Emperor' Concerto, really needs no introduction other than its own: the motif that dominates the Symphony (made up of four notes) epitomises all that was brilliant about the Classical era and still dominates concert halls today, as it will tonight.Conductor Alexander Shelley. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the first concert of its 2014-15 concert series at Hull City Hall, conducted by Paris-born Fabien Gabel, who is amongst the most sought-after guest conductors of his generation. Joining them is Spanish pianist Joaqu?n Achucarro, highly regarded both nationally and internationally, who takes centre stage with a performance of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. Schumann set Lord Byron's remorseful poem Manfred to music in 1848, writing a ?dramatic poem with music' with an overture and fifteen incidental numbers. It is the memorable Manfred Overture that will open the concert tonight. Rachmaninov's lyrical Piano Concerto No.2 is amongst the most celebrated piano concertos of the Romantic era, with the solo piano's famous opening chords welcomingly breaking the quiet of concert halls around the world - his native Russia closed the Winter Olympics 2014 with a nod to the work's first movement for all to hear. Sibelius' mostly optimistic melodies and enriching harmonies in his Fifth Symphony were contrasting to the world conflict into which it was born - the First World War; its orchestral elatedness closes the concert.Conductor Fabien Gabel. Performer Joaquin Achucarro.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to be returning to Hull City Hall with one of today's most successful pianists, the exceptionally gifted Freddy Kempf. The centrepiece of tonight's programme is without doubt one of the most popular works ever written for piano, Grieg's Piano Concerto. Its dramatic opening leads into rich lyrical melodies and passages of show-stopping virtuosity. Sibelius was the musical voice of Finland, expressing his compatriots' Romantic spirit, and their deep affinity with their land and folklore, clearly heard here in his Karelia Overture. Ravel's magical fairy-tale music of his Mother Goose Suite, though childlike and appealing, possesses an extraordinarily beautiful delicacy and poignancy. Originally written for piano, the Suite is made up of five movements, all of which are based on the enchanted stories. The Orchestra closes the concert with one of the most dynamic works from the beginning of the twentiethcentury, Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite, performing the most commonly played 1919 version of the Suite and painting a picture of the Russian folk tales of the magical glowing bird, from the 'Infernal Dance' of King Kashchei to its shimmering finale.Conductor Rory Macdonald. Spanish Fiesta - T0761556377

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra takes a trip to the Mediterranean in this Spanish-influenced programme. Bizet's Carmen Suite takes its inspiration from Seville's gypsy and toreador life; likewise Faur?'s Pavane and Ravel's Bol?ro are based on Spanish dance rhythms. The concert features two guitar concertos. Rogrigo's wonderfully popular and quintessentially Spanish sounding Concierto d'Aranjuez and a world premi?re of Stephen Goss' brand new Guitar Concerto for Northampton-based soloist Graham Roberts. Stephen Goss' influences are of an eclectic nature, which range from Beethoven's late piano music to the films of former Python Terry Gilliam. The result is a brilliantly integrated musical language and a concerto whose outer movements fizz with rhythmic vitality and breathless virtuosity.Conductor Simon Wright. Performer Graham Roberts (guitar).

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's season opens radiantly with Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture, a work brimming with bustling carnival scenes. Dvorák's powerful Cello Concerto is one of a series of remarkable works either sketched or completed during his visits to America between 1892 and 1895. This lyrical concerto is infused with a touch of melancholy, brought about by the illness and sudden death of his wife's sister (with whom had had once been in love), his passion finding radiant expression in the concerto's moving coda. Petrushka, Stravinsky's second ballet for Diaghilev, scored an enormous success at its first performance in 1911. This puppet love-story, as powerful as any human love-tragedy, drew from the 29-year-old Stravinsky an electrifying, supremely confident score. Heard frequently as a much abbreviated concert suite, the full score of the ballet is performed here as the composer originally conceived it.Conductor Charles Dutoit. Performer Mischa Maisky (cello).
