20 New Commissions Performed During New Music Biennial Weekend
T0
Building on the success of the New Music 20x12 weekend in July 2012, which was a highlight of the Cultural Olympiad, Southbank Centre presents up to 20 new commissions by UK-based composers as part of PRS for Music Foundation's New Music Biennial weekend. The new commissions will be premiered across the country throughout 2014, before being brought together at Southbank Centre. They will subsequently be performed at Glasgow UNESCO City of Music at Glasgow Concert Halls (2 Aug 2014), to coincide with the Scottish city hosting the Commonwealth Games. The international dimension of the Games will be the main inspiration for the new compositions. Chosen by a prestigious and diverse panel of judges including Dame Evelyn Glennie, Cerys Matthews and Jason Yarde, the selected composers cover a wide range of genres reflecting the diversity of musical life across the UK. Among the composers are Matthew Herbert, whose new piece will use the sounds of 20 pianos from across the world; Shingai Shoniwa, lead singer of the Noisettes collaborating with David Okumu; a collaboration between composer Andy Scott and poet/playwright Lemn Sissay, which looks at the world through the eyes of a child in the care system; and jazz musician Gwilym Simcock working with City of London Sinfonia and clarinettist Michael Collins.
