A rollercoaster ride down unexplored tributaries of the Amazon across the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and into the depths of some of the most brutal prisons in the world. A catalogue of close scrapes and surprise encounters with drug smugglers, Dutch airline hostesses, Carmelite monks, Maoist guerrillas and Mancunian ornithologists - not to mention crocodiles, jaguars and giant shit-eating centipedes.
