Akala archiveNorth London rapper, writer and founder of The Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company Akala burst onto the underground hip-hop scene back in 2004 when he became the first unsigned artist to appear on MTV UK's TRL show. His self-released debut, It's Not a Rumour, "fizzled with raw energy and outrageous talent" (BBC Music) and earned Akala the Best Hip Hop Artist award at the 2006 MOBOs (beating Kanye West to the title). His most recent output, 2013's The Thieves' Banquet, was praised for its "intricate flow" (The Guardian) and "emotive and socially aware rhythms" (Hit the Floor).
