Dracula

DraculaIn the spring of 1893 Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor, visits Castle Dracula in Transylvania for what he believes to be a routine deal with the nobleman Count Dracula. Harker soon realises that he is not a visitor at all, instead a prisoner to the deadly Dracula, who sets off to find Mina, Harker’s fiancée, and her sister Lucy. A fast moving, pacey run of Bram Stoke's Victorian Classic. As a fun of the novel, I am dubious about most adaptations, but this remained true to the text - and benefited massively by doing so. The character of Renfield was, sadly, omitted - but this only served to quicken the pace and delivery of the story. Jonathan and Mina Harker were played beautifully naturally by David Cole and Jasmine Smart. Smart captured perfectly the strength and dignity of the suffering wife, and the couple shone particularly in the gorgeous burial service. Martin Whatley was a strong, lean Dracula - and understand Tom Hatherley stepped in admirably to the large Dutch shoes of Van Helsing. Well worth seeing - and the setting could not be more perfect!
