La boheme

La bohemeT0812040818
Puccini's most enduring opera. The story of the love of the poor poet Rodolfo for the consumptive seamstress Mimi. Set in the Latin Quarter of Paris the course of their love is constantly threatened by Rodolfo's jealousy and Mimi's illness. The painter Marcello and the provocative Musetta are the other main characters. This is where 'your tiny hand is frozen' comes from and the last few bars, as Rodolfo realises Mimi is dead, are some of opera's most moving moments.

User Reviews

Martin Corrick (03Oct17): Of course this production is beautifully played and sung, as every production from the ROH should be. But it should surely be intelligent too. And it isn't. In fact some aspects are so bad as to be ridiculous, and even comical. The worst of these horrendous moments is the Amazing Moving Shed that utterly ruins the climactic scenes by shuffling awkwardly about in the snow. Yes, it shuffles, and no, it doesn't shuffle off. It sort of parks itself out of the way of the dying, but in doing so it removes any sense of tragedy. All right, one has to suspend one's brain for many operas, and particularly for this one, but there are so many ghastly moments in this that one wonders if any intelligent person had a look at it before its debut. Don't believe me? Go look. Martin Corrick
