Billy Bragg sings Woody Guthrie
T0
The American folk hero Woody Guthrie inspired a generation of songwriters and activists from Bob Dylan and Robert Kennedy to Bruce Springsteen. For years there were rumours that Guthrie's family were hoarding the manuscripts of hundreds of unrecorded Guthrie lyrics. In 1995, the rumours were proved to be true. The Guthries allowed the fabulous British songwriter Billy Bragg to compose new tunes to these lyrics. This programme explores Bragg's moving journey of discovery as he works with Guthrie's daughter to piece together the intentions behind the songs and do them justice. The results are extraordinary.
