Strauss's most popular work, a poignant social comedy, is given a sumptuous production by John Schlesinger for the Royal Opera. Amongst a top - flight cast, Kiri Te Kanawa shines in perhaps her finest role as the Marschallin. The production marked the 25th anniversary of conductor Sir Georg Solti's Covent Garden career.
