The opera features a group of European aristocrats who are en route to join in the French coronation festivities, but instead get waylaid in the French Tyrol. This aristocratic group has representatives from several European nations and along with Russian, Polish, French, German and Italian characters, Rossini also included an English colonel, a Tyrolean hostess, a Spanish admiral, a Roman poet and a Greek girl.
