T0104102493Derek has one of the most extraordinary musical minds of his generation. Now in his late 20's he was born premature at 25 weeks, weighing just over 700g. As a result of the oxygen therapy needed to keep him alive, Derek lost his sight and it later became apparent that he had severe learning difficulties as well. However by the age of two, Derek was already starting to teach himself piano, and he first appeared on television when he was only 8 years old. Public acclaim has followed ever since. Derek is a natural entertainer, revelling in early jazz which he plays in his own inimitable style. He has a phenomenal technique, and loves to improvise around his seemingly limitless repertoire, which he has learnt entirely by ear. The evening will kick off with a series of jazz standards and then Derek will invite requests from the audience: you name the piece, the style and the key! | |
