Production details
Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt has acquired a following for her penetrating interpretations of repertoire from the Baroque era to the 20th century. She presents a programme pairing works by Bach and Handel with pieces that their imaginative variations helped to inspire by Beethoven and Brahms. Opening with the most charming and graceful of Bach’s keyboard partitas, she continues with Beethoven’s epic Variations, based on a theme from his own Eroica Symphony. The second half pairs a high-spirited suite by Handel - a relative rarity - with Brahms’s full-blooded response to it in his mighty Variations on a Theme by Handel, which reaches its climax with a stunning fugue.
