T0716783564ppearing for the second time this season, hear one of the world's finest ensembles in contemporary chamber music perform works by two of today's greatest British composers. Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Tree of Strings, written in 2007, takes its title from a poem by Gaelic writer Sorley MacLean and explores the composer's memories of his stay on the Hebridean island of Raasay. The 30-minute piece evokes a musical world that is timeless and fragmentary but invigorating, with 'an elemental beauty that evokes enveloping mists and infinite skies' (The Guardian). The work was awarded the prestigious composition prize at the 2009 RPS Music Awards. Also in the programme is a world premiere by London-born composer Robert Saxton (b.1953). Saxton's two previous works for string quartet have been highly praised, with his music described as 'utterly compelling in its strength and sheer passion' (Musical Opinion). | |
