For the 1997 Passendale Peace Concert, singer and songwriter Robb Johnson was asked to write a suite of songs based upon the life stories of his grandfathers, both of whom took part in the battles in the Ypres Salient in 1917. The Gentle Men Suite traces the lives of his grandfathers before, during and after their experiences on the Western Front. Using official histories, original research and the souvenirs of family memory, Robb has constructed a unique personal history of the First World War.
