Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824, is one of the best known works of the Western classical repertoire and was one of the first examples of a choral symphony. Haydn's Mass was written in 1798 and originally called Missa in Angustiis or Mass for Troubled Times, a reference to the threat of war posed by Napoleon. It was a happy coincidence that at its premi?re news broke of the French defeat at the Battle of the Nile. From that moment the work was nicknamed the ?Nelson Mass'.
