On the road to Newtown, we bring a programme full of light, and energy. We're delighted to welcome back conductor Otto Tausk, and friend of the Orchestra, Baiba Skride, who will perform Sibelius'Violin Concerto. Helios, named after Greek god of the sun, depicts the sun rising and falling over the Aegean Sea;Danish composer Carl Nielsen was inspired to write it while staying in Athens with his wife, admiring the coast before him. Beethoven's fifth Symphony needs little introduction, with one of the most iconic openings of all time. Its driving rhythms, and combination of drama and darkness, create a work showing the magnificence of both Beethoven's writing and the symphony as an art form. Little wonder that it continues to be the gateway to orchestral music for many, and was one of the works selected for BBC Music's Ten Pieces project last season.
