Expect the unexpected. Beethoven symphonies are supposed to be thunderous blockbusters, but the Fourth is a sparkling, sunlit delight - with a wicked sense of humour thrown in! Mozart's violin concertos are usually elegant and demure - but in the finale of his Fifth, he throws caution to the winds with a shamelessly rough-cut gypsy dance. And kindly old Papa Haydn would never write a dark and powerful tragic symphony, surely? Well, in his 95th he does exactly that! The charismatic young British conductor Paul Watkins is just the man to spring a few musical surprises, and violinist Jennifer Koh is his perfect musical partner.
