The Old Joint Stock continues to champion young emerging talent on the Jazz scene in Birmingham and the West Midlands featuring, amongst others, students past and present from the Birmingham Conservatoire. This month features the Trystan Williams Quartet. Born into a musical family from the Southampton area, Trystan started playing the trombone at a young age. Has spent the last 4 years studying on the renowned Birmingham Conservatoire, Bmus Jazz (hons) course. Whilst there he has had the opportunity of studying under musicians and teachers such as Dave Holland, Jean Toussaint, Scott Stroman, Mike Gibbs, Hans Koller, Liam Noble, Jeremy Price, Percy Pursglove, Ashley Horton and Pete Beachill. This trio is the core of Trystan's 'Mental' collective, a group of varying number put together to suit the specific project. Taking influence from the likes of Robin Eubanks, Hal Crook, Steve Coleman and Lennie Tristano, the collective is aimed at pushing forward the role of the trombone in a contemporary group. Later this year he will be releasing a CD of tunes written and inspired by the school of Lennie Tristano which will be available on itunes. Good Ale and Good Food also available whist you listen.
