Kasai Masai - and Atongo Zimba archiveBased in London, Congolese Kasai Masai bring us the traditional sound of the most remote equatorial African villages with an Urban Twist. Kasai Masai return to the Gulbenkian after their fabulous concert last February celebrating 10 years of Music for Change. This time charismatic band leader Nickens Nkoso brings djembe and saxophone to their five piece line up mix. Playing ancestral music, their sound is rooted in the healing power of percussion and chanting combined with the majestic Congolese folk guitar and jazz sax. Last time the audience found it impossible to stand still in the presence of such absorbing African rhythms. Ghanaian singer and guitarist Atongo Zimba, opens the concert with his distinctive voice, alternately praising, cajoling, poking fun, and caressing. He makes his music fit into one Arabic-Indian-African groove.
