Death and The Maiden
"Give me your hand, beautiful and sweet creature, I am your friend" - so sings Death to a young maiden in the song which lends the name "Death and the Maiden" to Schubert's magnificent Quartet in D minor. Written at a time when the composer was forced to accept his own inevitable demise, the quartet is an intense and menacing work, dancing with death throughout, and has deservedly become one of the most masterful pillars of the String Quartet repertoire.
