Part of a longer score of incidental music to Goethe's play, Beethoven's Egmont overture nevertheless stands as a self-contained tone-poem in its own right. His youthful piano concerto shows the composer advancing in his own style from Mozart's model, with a tender slow movement and mischievous and sprightly finale. The impulse behind the Pastoral symphony was Beethoven's love of the Austrian countryside. The five movements embrace solitary contemplation and peasant's celebration, a summer thunderstorm and a final, tranquil hymn of thanksgiving.
