Brahms' Piano Quartet in G is one of the grandest and most innovative of all his pieces. The first movement alone contains five thematic groups, while the tempestuous finale ?alla Zingarese' is the first movement written in the Hungarian style that Brahms was to return to so often in his career. It is therefore a natural pairing with Gy?rgy Ligeti's monumental Horn Trio, written in homage to Brahms. Some allusions are made to the folk music of Hungary and the Balkans, but the use of clever devices ? for example using the natural harmonics of the French Horn to ?bend' the tuning ? brings a fresh and arresting perspective to a work that has its roots in traditional Romantic structures.
