The Turangalîla-Symphonie (1948) is the centrepiece of Messiaen’s trilogy based on the legend of Tristan and Isolde. A joyous celebration of both idealistic and carnal love, its title derives from Sanskrit words referring to ‘life force, the game of creation, rhythm and movement.’ Commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, Lutoslawski’s Concerto (1988) is marked by its shimmering colours - the composer undoubtedly knows, as one critic has written, ‘how to make the piano ring and sing.’
