The talented Soloists of Oxford Philomusica return to the North Wall, this time with a dazzling performance from members of the orchestra's wind section. Their chamber music skills will shine through Barber's Summer Music, a work as much an instrumental showcase as it is evocative of a perfect lazy summer day. Excerpts from Six Metamorphoses after Ovid provide a fitting tribute to their composer, Benjamin Britten, in his centenary year. Originally written as incidental music to a play, Debussy's beguiling and fantastical Syrinx is now recognised as a seminal part of the flute repertoire. Ibert's charming set of miniatures for oboe, clarinet and bassoon are a delightful antithesis to Syrinx's bold statement.
