Tchaikovsky s first string quartet written for a benefit concert to assist the financially struggling composer was an immediate success, particularly owing to the attractive and moving melody of the Andante based on an old Russian folk song. Shostakovich s seventh string quartet, a memorial to his wife who died suddenly in December 1954, also includes a poignant, slow movement. The concert finishes with Dvor?k s ?American String Quartet a work that has garnered universal plaudits for the Pavel Haas Quartet.
