Although Glazunov was a contemporary of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, his work is reminiscent of that of his more Romantic compatriots Tchaikovsky and Rimsky- Korsakov. His Violin Concerto contrasts Slavic melancholy and cheery fanfares while showcasing the soloist’s technical brilliance. Dvorák’s Ninth Symphony was composed to celebrate Columbus’s discovery of the ‘New World’ with American tunes and rhythms throughout, yet the composer’s Bohemian roots and nostalgia for his native Czechoslovakia also shine through.
