The first of a series revealing Beethoven's influence on the avant-garde pairs the mighty Hammerklavier Sonata with music by Charles Ives. Beethoven was a humanist as well as a musical revolutionary, and his music is steeped in both these qualities, including the Hammerklavier Sonata, which he composed in 1818. A century later, Charles Ives was becoming known as a radical modernist of his day, and later became recognised as the father of American music. He was hugely influenced by the Transcendentalist movement of writers and thinkers based around Concord, Massachusetts. The four movements of the Concord Sonata are dedicated to writers from the movement: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Amos Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, and Henry David Thoreau. Listen out, too, for quotes from the Hammerklavier throughout the work. Aimard's three appearances in our 2018/19 Classical Season were greeted by rave reviews. Of his performance in our Ligeti in Wonderland weekend, The Independent commented: 'The pianist never misses a beat over a cycle of 18 etudes that stretch the human limits of playing.'

One of a pair of concerts by Pierre-Laurent Aimard celebrating the Liszt bicentenary. This typically inventive programme offers an opportunity to hear the composer s works alongside those by the great piano composers who followed him. After extracts from the pictorial Romanticism of the Annees de Pelerinage we hear Nenie by Bartok, Liszt s successor as the foremost Hungarian composer of his era. The concert continues with a pair of works by Liszt and Ravel which both seek to capture the beauty and movement of water. A contemporary work from award-winning Italian composer Marco Stroppa depicts a traditional ceremony from Easter Island and finally there is Liszt s portrait of St Francis of Assisi and a dazzling evocation of exotic birdsong by Messiaen, with whose music Aimard is strongly associated.

Mozart's Concerto was premiered in Vienna in 1785, soon after his marriage to Constanze and at one of the busiest periods of his life. It has a bracing symphonic amplitude, its writing for piano remarkably inventive. Suk’s ‘Asrael’ Symphony (1906) is engaged with death: it takes its title from the Islamic angel of death and is a double memorial to both Dvorak, Suk’s beloved teacher, and to his wife Otylka (Dvorak’s daughter).Company London Symphony Orchestra.
