In his Third Piano Concerto Beethoven opened up a new dramatic and physical scope, pushing the instrument to new expressive lengths. The same maverick energy pulses through the 'Choral Fantasy', anticipating the Ninth Symphony in its unexpected resort to words in its finale. In Schoenberg's tour de force Friede auf Erden ('Peace on Earth') the composer takes tonality to its limits.
