Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra pair a classic 19th-century symphony with the world premiere of a newly completed orchestral triptych. Premiered just days before the composer's sudden death, Tchaikovsky's 'Pathetique' Symphony, with its evocative subtitle, is entangled with its author's own struggles and emotions. Its passionate outpourings meet the intricate play of proportion, density and energy in American composer Catherine Lamb's mesmerising Portions Transparent/Opaque - a trio of movements inspired by colour theory that move gradually from sonic expansion to collapse.Company BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Ilan Volkov.

Ethel Smyth's The Wreckers - T01452547115

Admired by Mahler and Britten and praised as a ‘masterpiece' by Thomas Beecham, Ethel Smyth's opera The Wreckers - a psychological drama of 'wrecking, religion and love' - was the pinnacle of the composer's career. With its sweeping musical soundscapes, passionate central love story and radical interrogation of fear, hypocrisy and mob violence, it's a compelling piece of music-theatre, whose heroine is a mirror of her fascinating, unorthodox creator. Glyndebourne presents the opera for the first time with its original score and French libretto. Robin Ticciati conducts an exciting international cast in this semi staged performance.Company Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Company London Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Robin Ticciati. Des Canyons Aux Etoiles - T495248523

The ?wild and colourful beauty' of Utah and Arizona was the inspiration for one of the 20th century's most singular and extraordinary works, a musical act of ?praise and contemplation' painted in the brightest and most vivid of sounds. Olivier Messiaen's mighty Des canyons aux etoiles... ('From the Canyons to the Stars...') is a sonic meditation in which birdsong mingles with desert winds, and the rustling of sand. Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC SO, with pianist Nicolas Hodges and horn player Martin Owen taking the demanding solo parts.

Pioneers of Sound - T01337122412

Daphne Oram's visionary Still Point fills the cavernous space of the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in the premiere of a revised realisation based on recently discovered archive material. Composed in 1949 - almost a decade before Oram co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - the piece was possibly the first to combine a live orchestra with live electronic manipulations, here played via turntables. Still Point forms the centrepiece of a late-night sonic exploration that features work by Delia Derbyshire - another Radiophonic Workshop pioneer who achieved cult status for her electronic arrangement of the Doctor Who TV theme - as well as new works inspired by the Radiophonic legacy. Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 - T2031667672

Beethoven helped change the European musical landscape but in his final symphony he imagined the most startling transformation of all: from a brutal, joyless world to one of uplifting and embracing brotherhood. He did it by writing his most vivid music yet and employing - for the first time in a symphony - a chorus, proclaiming Friedrich Schiller's uplifting 'Ode to Joy'. Vladimir Jurowski returns to the Proms, opening with a new work from one of the finest orchestral craftsmen of our time, Magnus LindbergPerformer Miah Persson (soprano). Holst - The Planets - T01725056543

Once an irascible enfant terrible, Pierre Boulez was born 90 years ago. The Proms celebrations continue with one of his earliest works. Originally a series of 12 brilliant miniatures for piano, Notations is gradually being expanded by the composer into an orchestral cycle. Holst's The Planets brings musical imagery of a different kind. Violinist Leila Josefowicz makes a welcome return to the Proms, with a new concerto composed specially for her by one of Italy's greatest living composers. Beethoven Cycle - Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8 - T1692845409

Daneil Barenboim continues his survey of Beethoven - whose music, he believes, 'speaks to all people'. Tonight, two Beethoven symphonies of dancing athleticism and universal appeal frame one of Pierre Boulez's mesmerising etensions of earlier works: Anth?mes 2 is scored for violin and live electronics and its serenely beautiful expressivity may come as a surprise. Beethoven's ebullient Seventh, famously dubbed 'the apotheosis of dance', was the last piece conducted by Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood. BBC National Orchestra of Wales - T1719379464

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales launches our cycle of Schumann symphonies with the First, whose freshness and drive reflect the productive frenzy that seized its composer around the time of his marriage. It's preceded by the stirring overture to the Cherubini opera which Brahms hailed as 'the highest peak of dramatic music'. Written for tonight's soloist, Simon Holt's percussion concerto was partly inspired by the table of tools kept by his great-uncle, a taxidermist. The perky adventures of Strauss's mythical rogue forms a brilliantly coloured conclusion. Finish time: approx. 21:05Conductor Thierry Fischer. Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Performer Colin Currie (percussion).
