BBC Symphony Orchestra - T529764492

Echoing the waltzes of last month's Viennese Night (Prom 12), tonight's Prom ends with a trio of Ravel pieces in which an evocative waterscape is framed by contrasting evocations of the waltz - one celebrating Vienna's heyday, the other casting a wry backwards glance over its decline. Two contrasting piano concertos - a first by George Benjamin (50 this year) and Mozart's last - display the wide-ranging talents of pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, a friend and colleague of Benjamin since they met as students of Olivier Messiaen in Paris. Given its UK premiere at last year's Aldeburgh Festival, where Aimard is Artistic Director, Duet is a search for sounds that orchestra and piano can share. Finish time: approx. 21:35Conductor Jonathan Nott. Performer Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Classic MGM Film Musicals - T772455836

John Wilson and his hand-picked Orchestra celebrate 75 years of MGM musicals with songs from unforgettable movie classics, including The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis, The Harvey Girls, Brigadoon, High Society, The Band Wagon and Singin' in the Rain. Amazingly, although all the original orchestral parts were lost when the studio destroyed its music library to make way for a car park, Wilson has succeeded in reconstructing the scores by painstakingly transcribing each soundtrack by ear. He is joined by starry singers from the classical and musical theatre worlds, as well as by the elite Maida Vale Singers. There will be one interval. Approx. end time: 21:30Performer Kim Criswell (vocalist). Performer Sarah Fox (soprano). Performer Thomas Allen (baritone). Performer Curtis Stigers (vocalist). Company Maida Vale Singers. Company John Wilson Orchestra. Conductor John Wilson.
