Felix Klieser Plays Mozart - T02006437438

Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 - a passionate, unashamedly emotional score from a man who once declared himself 'completely under the spell of Tchaikovsky' - is paired here with a kaleidoscopic tour of the orchestra by the Ukrainian composer Ivan Karabits, father of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's long-standing Chief Conductor, Kirill Karabits. Premiered in 1981, his Concerto for Orchestra No. 1 was written to celebrate the 1,500th anniversary of the founding of Kyiv in chiming bells, fanfares and marches: a sonic snapshot of a city in happier days. Horn virtuoso Felix Klieser makes his Proms debut with Mozart's sunny Concerto No. 4.Performer Felix Klieser (horn). Company Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Kirill Karabits.

Ryan Bancroft Conducts Mahler's Fourth Symphony - T0300593526

BBC NOW and Principal Conductor Ryan Bancroft venture through the musical looking-glass in a programme spanning almost 200 years. Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte takes a Haydn string quartet as the starting point for a kaleidoscopic musical journey through time. It's a musical bridge back to the world of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, whose exploratory Romantic energy in turn propels us forwards to Mahler's Symphony No. 4 Infused with a love of nature and featuring a heart-rending slow movement, it concludes with a beguiling child's-eye view of heaven featuring Miah Persson as the soloist.

A Hero's Life - T1280612462

Triumphant horns and a flirtatious, vivacious solo violin set the tone for Strauss's vivid autobiographical tone-poem Ein Heldenleben - 'A Hero's Life', outwardly inspired by 'an ideal of great and manly heroism'. The orchestra is also at the forefront in Dvorak's Cello Concerto, sounding as an equal partner to the soloist - German cellist Daniel Muller-Schott, who returns to the Proms under tonight's debut conductor Otto Tausk - in an intensely personal work that marries a pervasive sense of longing with real passion. In the centenary year of British women gaining the right to vote, Ethel Smyth's evocative Act 2 Prelude from The Wreckers celebrates a key British composer who, as a suffragette, spent two months in Holloway Prison.Performer Daniel Muller-Schott (cello). Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conductor Otto Tausk.

Ginastera, Britten and Schubert - T1807239509

In his bittersweet Piano Concerto, Britten set out to exploit the piano's 'enormous compass, percussive qualities and suitability for figuration'. The result is a true bravura piece whose razor-sharp edge conceals a gregarious smile. Alongside the first London performance of Alberto Ginastera's very Argentine view of the symphony orchestra comes the inexorable momentum of Schubert's most invigorating symphony, his 'Great' Ninth.Performer Steven Osborne (piano). James MacMillan & Mahler - T1869201882

Mahler's mighty Symphony No. 5 is the climax of this second Prom from Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Vaughan Williams & Mahler - T01139225185

In the second of his two concerts with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Donald Runnicles conducts a programme that looks to the past - a musical meditation on history, death and loss that still speaks powerfully, 100 years after the start of the First World War. Written at the bleakest point in Mahler's life, following the death of his daughter, his wife's illness and the diagnosis of the disease that would quickly kill him, the Ninth Symphony gazes bitterly into the abyss, before bidding farewell to the world in its elegiac final movement. The ecstatic string-writing of Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis looks back to his musical forebears, reimagining an English identity that would so soon find itself under threat. There will be no interval. Finish time approx. 20:25Company BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Donald Runnicles.
