National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - T1903042655

The music of Sergey Prokofiev looms large in this fascinating collaboration between Vladimir Jurowski and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. First, an esoteric offering from the master's London-based grandson, a crossover artist in the best sense, determined to find new audiences and to reconfigure the classical tradition by way of Minimalist grooves, dancefloor beats, club nights and remixes. The influence of the senior Prokofiev is plain in the sizzling keyboard writing of Britten's early Piano Concerto, which gives BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Benjamin Grosvenor another chance to shine, following his First Night Proms debut. In the second half, Prokofiev's ballet music recounts the doomed love of Verona's most romantic couple. Finish time: approx. 21:05Performer Benjamin Grosvenor (piano). Performer DJ Switch (dj turntables). Company National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Conductor Vladimir Jurowski.

BBC Symphony Chorus - T152130750

The BBC Symphony Chorus - one of Europe's leading large choirs - takes the spotlight in this afternoon Prom, under its Director of 21 years, Stephen Jackson. While Daniel-Lesur's The Song of Songs sets biblical eroticism in the sensuous French tradition, Stephen Montague in his new commission is inspired partly by the rhythmic play of linguistic utterance for its own sake. In two hushed, hypnotic brass pieces, Takemitsu, like his 'great mentor' Debussy, makes his visions unfold with dream-like spontaneity. By contrast, Poulenc's wartime cantata from occupied France - one of the great challenges of the choral repertoire - moves from despair to hope in a hymn to freedom. Finish time: approx. 17:30 no intervalConductor Stephen Jackson. Conductor Andrew Crowley. Performer BBC Symphony Chorus. Company Soloist from Trinity College of Music and Chamber Choir. Company London Brass. Company O Duo.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T1183754541

Oliver Knussen, the BBC SO's new Artist-in- Association, introduces his latest piece, due to be premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra in May. He also gives the first Proms performance of Helen Grime's dramatic evocation of the electric atmosphere before a storm. Stravinsky's 1936 ballet Jeu de cartes is a musical poker game in three 'deals', ending with the Joker trounced by a royal flush. In the second part of his Roman trilogy, Respighi takes us on a dawn-todusk tour of the city's most famous fountains; while, in orchestrating Balakirev's 'oriental fantasy', Casella propelled an already virtuosic keyboard piece into even more exotic extremes. Approx finish time: 21:35Conductor Oliver Knussen.
