Nigel Kennedy plays Bach - T1743863810When in 2008 Nigel Kennedy came back to the Proms after an absence of 21 years, his Late Night concert with his own quartet followed an early-evening performance of Elgar's Violin Concerto which he capped with a solo Bach encore. Tonight's special event confirms that JSB continues to mean a great deal to him. The man dubbed 'the people's violinist' has recorded Bach concertos with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and with members of the Berlin Philharmonic. Discovering something new every time he explores the composer's music, Kennedy points up the parallels with jazz. Bach loved the dance forms of his own day and his music benefits from being played with emotional freedom and a keen rhythmic sense. There will be no interval. Finish time: approx. 23:00Performer Nigel Kennedy (violin).

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T495317842The BBC Symphony Orchestra's Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis conducts a typically wide-ranging programme whose pairings represent two musical homages. According to Messiaen, 'Mozart always smiled. His music also smiled.' Hence the title of French composer's tribute, written for the Mozart bicentenary of 1991. Parry's elegy to Brahms, whom he regarded as 'the last of the great German heroes of musical art', precedes Brahms's Fourth Symphony, whose final movement Passacaglia influenced Parry's 'English' Symphony. Finish time: approx. 21:50Conductor Andrew Davis (Sir). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Performer Louis Lortie (piano).

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - T1461678888The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain returns under its new Principal Conductor, Vasily Petrenko, who made his Proms debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra last year. In his traversal of the Tchaikovsky piano concertos, Liverpool-born Stephen Hough reaches that great warhorse the Concerto No.1. With its brilliant textures and hints of Polish folk music, Lutoslawski's 1954 concerto is a real showpiece for any orchestra, while our final instalment of Respighi's Roman trilogy brings the first performance at the Proms of Roman Festivals - a cinematic survey of the Eternal City's ever-changing festivals, from ancient gladiatorial combats in the Circus Maximus to the Petrushka-esque carnival bustle in the Piazza Navona. Approx. finish time: 21:00Performer Stephen Hough (piano). Conductor Vasily Petrenko.
