Brahms & Mahler - T01577658879Featured artist Christian Tetzlaff has played many of the great violin concertos but this is his first Proms performance of the big-boned, technically demanding work by Brahms, all of whose concertos can be heard during this Proms season. With his early Das klagende Lied, Mahler hit upon his own unique style. Tonight's account includes 'Waldmärchen', the emotive first panel dealing with the quest of brother knights for a flower that will win a queen's hand but leads to sibling murder. The score resurfaced as recently as 1969. Finish time: approx. 21:25Performer Christian Tetzlaff (violin). Performer Melanie Diener (soprano). Performer Ekaterina Gubanova (mezzo-soprano). European Union Youth Orchestra - T1133346524The third youth orchestra of the season brings the fruits of its summer residency with Sir Colin Davis. One of the world's great Berlioz champions, Davis includes the composer's evocation of Byron's hero Childe Harold, whose solo viola part was written for Paganini and is performed here by former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Maxim Rysanov (who returns on the Last Night). Further colourful orchestral narratives come in Janacek's explosive tone-poem - honouring a Cossack hero - and in the family feuding (as well as the rapt love music) of Tchaikovsky's Shakespearean fantasy. Finish time: approx. 21:00Conductor Colin Davis (Sir). Company European Union Youth Orchestra. Performer Maxim Rysanov (viola). | |

Britten Sinfonia - T02087336097We open our day of music for two or more pianos with Fauré's delightful Dolly suite, originally written for two players at one keyboard. Mozart's double concerto is full of playful intimacy, while Saint-Saëns's playful zoological suite contrasts with Lutoslawski's virtuosic reworking of a famous Paganini Caprice. There's also a new work for two pianos by Anna Meredith, whose nation-hopping froms introduced her to Proms audiences last year. Approx. finish time: 17:15Performer Katia Labeque (piano).
