Liszt/Gliere & Rachmaninov - T0870831930

Liszt's symphonic poem (he invented the genre) is based on Victor Hugo's poem about the legendary Mazeppa, a nobleman caught in flagrante who is tied to a wild horse which is then driven into the night. Continuing this season's exploration of non-standard concertos, Ailish Tynan tackles a Glière rarity unheard at the Proms since the 1980s. By contrast, Rachmaninov's gloriously lyrical Second Symphony has become a firm favourite in recent years. A sense of symphonic unity is provided by its network of thematic cross-references, which also give rise to some of the composer's best tunes. The Adagio is especially famous for its lovely, long-breathed clarinet melody over softly murmuring violins. Finish time: approx. 21:10Performer Ailish Tynan (soprano). Company Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Kirill Karabits.

Danish National Symphony Orchestra - T01808125782

Thomas Dausgaard conducts his Danish forces in Tchaikovsky's ever-captivating Violin Concerto and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, overwhelming in its nobly expansive final-movement 'Swan Hymn' climax. Three short choral pieces by György Ligeti - including Lux aeterna, heard in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey - take us to ethereal heights, while Ligeti himself recognised the mesmeric, free-floating character of Rued Langgaard's 1918 Music of the Spheres as prefiguring his own style. Finish time: approx. 22:05Conductor Thomas Dausgaard. Company Danish National Vocal Ensemble. Company Danish National Concert Choir. Company Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Performer Inger Dam-Jensen (soprano). Performer Henning Kraggerud (violin).
