Steve Reich & Ensemble Modern - T1317334421The Proms celebrates Steve Reich's 75th birthday year with a distinguished instrumental ensemble - making its first appearance since 2004 - and a clutch of seminal pieces. While this founding father of American Minimalism remains extraordinarily active, his Music for 18 Musicians is widely recognised as a peak in his own output and that of post-war music in general. The Ensemble Modern, no strangers to a work whose sonic architecture is founded on subtle shifts of harmonic and rhythmic direction, are sure to illuminate every instrumental strand, pointing connections with the composer's earlier process music. An amazing score that can be enjoyed on many levels, simultaneously propulsive and calming, this is the first time Music for 18 Musicians has been heard at the Proms. There will be no interval. Finish time: approx. 23:30Company Synergy Vocals. Company Ensemble Modern. Performer Steve Reich (percussion/piano). | |

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T01064341815Berlioz's exuberant portrait of seafaring brigands launches an evening of colourful virtuosity with Lionel Bringuier - the young Frenchman already established as Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who tonight makes his Proms debut. Renowned Chopin interpreter Nelson Freire marks the composer's bicentenary, and the concert ends with the joyous final scenes from Ravel's lavishly scored pastoral ballet set in Ancient Greece. Roussel's vivid, action-packed Third Symphony is one of the finest flowerings of the French symphonic tradition that began with Saint-Saëns and Franck.
