Tchaikovsky, Mazzoli and Prokofiev - T1633622448

The Philharmonia Orchestra makes its first Proms appearance under Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali with highlights from two classic Russian ballets that combine star-crossed lovers and intervening forces in their different ways. Death - tragic, macabre, but also blackly comic - hangs over Missy Mazzoli's Violin Concerto, 'Procession': Jennifer Koh is the soloist in the European premiere of a piece that looks back to the funeral rituals of medieval Europe during the Black Death.Performer Jennifer Koh (violin). Company Philharmonia Orchestra. Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Solomon's Knot - T293370943

Singing with small forces and without a conductor, British musical collective Solomon's Knot brings a contemporary clarity and freshness to all its performances. The singers make their Proms debut with an all-Bach Late Night Prom of cantatas composed for the Feast of St Michael - the saint who, appropriately, protects against the evils of darkness and night. The programme includes the richly scored cantatas Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir and Es erhub sich ein Streit, as well as the dramatic Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg, with its glorious chorale finale.

Messiaen - Turangalila Symphony - T19594876

Hindu philosophy is the guiding thread through this Prom of music by one of the 20th century's undisputed masters and one of its neglected mavericks. Messiaen's Turangal?la Symphony translates the ?curious, exquisite, unexpected melodic contours' of the Hindu tradition for Western ears. John Foulds's music was heavily influenced by his spiritual fascination with India; his style shifts in his Three Mantras from the rhythmic violence of Stravinsky to meditative loveliness and the sleek modernism of Ravel. Finish time approx 21:45Performer Steven Osborne (piano). Performer Valerie Hartmann-Claverie (ondes martenot). Company London Symphony Chorus (women's voices). Company BBC Philharmonic. Sibelius, Bridge & Sir Peter Maxwell Davies - T0416397131

The chain of influence between Sibelius and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is a direct one. Sibelius's seamlessly shifting structures and stirring musical language (both showcased in his Second Symphony) are echoed and evolved by Davies, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year. His Fifth Symphony shares its single-movement form with Sibelius's Seventh and its vigorous brass writing also owes a debt to the elder composer. Finnish conductor John Storg?rds, Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, champions his nation's musical hero and also pays tribute to the First World War anniversary in Bridge's haunting Oration - part lament, part warning. Finish time approx. 22:05Performer Leonard Elschenbroich (cello). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor John Storgards.

These include the cantata movement 'Sheep may safely graze', popularised by Myra Hess in her piano version, and Briggs's own arrangement of the best known of Bach's orchestral suites, containing the popular 'Air on the G String'. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - T01171874978

The BBC Scottish SO, under Chief Conductor Ilan Volkov, pair two Diaghilev commissions. With its pounding rhythms, cataclysmic upheavals and savage scenario of a young girl dancing herself to death, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is still genuinely earthshattering - no wonder Nijinsky's 1913 production provoked a riot. Begun as a homage to the Viennese waltz but twisted by his wartime experiences into a darker vision of a society whirling to disaster, Ravel's La valse was actually rejected by Diaghilev and only finally staged in the year of his death, choreographed by Nijinsky's sister Bronislava. Unsuk Chin's new Cello Concerto was written specially for Alban Gerhardt, an early member of Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme. Approx. finish time: 21:55Conductor Ilan Volkov.
