Although the work's choral and instrumental requirements are massive, perhaps most revolutionary is its exploitation of the performance space as an element of composition. Spaghetti Western Orchestra - T01483523510The five inventive multitaskers of the Spaghetti Western Orchestra have their own way of presenting film music in concert. Fascinated by the scores of Ennio Morricone, they have devised an unclassifiable entertainment in which his epic soundtracks for film maker Sergio Leone are recreated with extraordinary virtuosity on instruments both conventional and rather less so. We really embraced the absurdity of a bunch of Aussie guys trying to do what Morricone did with a cast of hundreds and so we went about listening to the music and exploring the idea that every sound is equal and giving equal importance to all sounds.' Expect a loose narrative, new uses for the asthma inhaler and the cornflake packet, and a rich harvest of post-modern laughs. There will be no interval Finish time: approx. 23:30 | |

Bach Orchestral Transcriptions - T058424391The grand finale to Bach Day features arrangements for orchestra made across almost a century. They range from the subtly coloured ballet score that William Walton drew from several of Bach's cantatas to the thunderous reinventions of organ works that begin and end the concert. Also appearing are Grainger's 'ramble' on 'Sheep may safely graze', Malcolm Sargent's recasting of 'Air on the G String', Granville Bantock's treatment of the popular chorale 'Sleepers, awake!' - and two special commissions from young composers who offer their new reimaginings based on movements from Bach's sonatas for solo violin and for viola da gamba. Having opened with the pure, pared-down period-performance approach stemming from the research of recent decades, Bach Day tonight lets its hair down in a glorious, if slightly unfashionable, celebration. BBC Symphony Orchestra - T01871277811A decade in the making, Birtwistle's 'lyric tragedy' was the culmination of a long-standing obsession with the Orpheus myth. To mark the composer's 75th birthday, the BBC SO presents its central act - in which Orpheus journeys to the Underworld through a series of 17 arches - contrasting its dazzling complexity with the classical poise of Stravinsky's ballet Apollo. The opener by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood won the Radio 3 Listeners' Award at the 2006 British Composer Awards. Approx. finish time: 21:55Company BBC Singers. Conductor Martyn Brabbins.
