Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake - T01838550213Valery Gergiev has often come to the Proms with music from his native land and in 2008 it was the turn of The Sleeping Beauty. This year the maestro brings his Russian-based ensemble with another of Tchaikovsky's three great ballet scores: Swan Lake, whose lyricism and full-blown drama featured in the recent Oscar-winning Black Swan. The plot concerns a Prince who is expected to choose a bride from among the guests at a forthcoming ball. Instead he falls in love with Odette, the Swan Queen, whose swan subjects revert to human form between midnight and dawn. Early spectators were puzzled by the symphonic proportions and sheer depth of feeling Tchaikovsky brings to the tale, qualities brought into fuller focus when all of this glorious score is heard. There will be one interval. Finish time: approx. 22:05Company Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. Performer Valery Gergiev.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T01025677875Having conducted Britten's Peter Grimes last year as Music Director of English National Opera, Edward Gardner joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra for the four evocative Sea Interludes from the opera. The heartrending strings and tolling bell of the Cantus by Arvo Pärt (75 this year) forms a hypnotic tribute to Britten; and the programme ends with the Fifth Symphony by one of Britten's great friends - a work which brought Shostakovich back into favour with Soviet authorities. Former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Alina Ibragimova performs the new concerto by Huw Watkins, who, as a pianist, often appears with her in recital. Finish time: approx. 21:15Conductor Edward Gardner. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Performer Alina Ibragimova (violin).
