Bruch's First Violin Concerto - T287314686

South Korean star violinist Bomsori makes her Proms debut with Bruch's much-loved First Violin Concerto - the ‘richest' and ‘most seductive' of all the concertos for the instrument, according to 19th-century virtuoso Joseph Joachim. The folk music that runs through Bruch's concerto also pulses through Brahms's lively Hungarian Dances and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra - a musical tour de force that takes listeners from 'sternness' to 'life-assertion'. This season's focus on the music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor begins with the composer's lyrical, Elgar-inspired Ballade. Anja Bihlmaier conducts the BBC Philharmonic in her Proms debut.Performer Bomsori (violin). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Anja Bihlmaier.

Bruckner's Sixth Symphony - T1460011152

This season the Proms looks beyond the piano and violin to concertos that explore more unusual instruments, including the tuba, trombone and theremin. Award-winning violist Lawrence Power launches the strand with a new concerto by Canadian composer Cassandra Miller. It is the latest in a long series of major works Power has commissioned for an instrument whose range and reputation he continues to expand. The concert opens with Webern's airy, pellucid arrangement of Bach's 'richest piece of fugal writing' - the six-part Ricercar from his Musical Offering - and closes with the symphony Bruckner himself considered his ‘sassiest'. Baffling the composer's contemporaries with its relative brevity and sudden shifts of musical direction, it has been praised for its ‘exceptionally beautiful' themes and the subtlety of its instrumentation.Performer Lawrence Power (viola). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Omer Meir Wellber.

Debussy Pelleas et Melisande - T1191729957

Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande is an operatic fairy tale played out in the shadowy half-light of the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde. Love, desire, power and violence permeate this luminous score - arguably one of the greatest of the 20th century. This semi-staged performance of Glyndebourne's new production, marking the centenary of the composer's death, is conducted by the company's Music Director Robin Ticciati, with Christopher Purves as the obsessive Golaud and former Kathleen Ferrier Award-winner Christina Gansch as his beloved Melisande.Performer Christina Gansch (Melisande). Haydn, HK Gruber & Stravinsky - T1915747337

Petrushka, with its bustling Shrovetide fair and colourful carnival characters, launches a week dominated by the music of Stravinsky. All three of the composer's great scores for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes are performed this season - bright, folkloric textures gradually giving way to new musical brutality. Haydn's Paris Symphony set the City of Light talking over a century earlier. The second movement of 'La reine' (The Queen) shares Stravinsky's sophisticated approach to folk music, while Viennese maverick HK Gruber's into the open... echoes the ballet's vivid scoring with instruments from Thailand, Africa and South America. Former BBC Young Musician of the Year Colin Currie joins the BBC Philharmonic under its Principal Guest Conductor John Storgards. Finish time: approx 21:40Performer Colin Currie (percussion). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor John Storgards.

Beethoven, Dvorak & R.Strauss - T01971742500

From the pastoral landscapes of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 to the vibrant folk scenes of Strauss's tone-poem and Dvorak's Violin Concerto, tonight's Prom takes a vivid journey across Central Europe. Celebrated Straussian David Zinman appears in his final concert as Chief Conductor of Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra, stepping down after almost 20 years. Strauss appears at his playful, joyous best in the exploits of folk-hero/prankster Till Eulenspiegel, while Julia Fischer makes a welcome return to the Proms in the last of the great Romantic violin concertos - an inventive and idiosyncratic work previously too often neglected in favour of Mendelssohn or Bruch. Finish time approx. 21:50Performer Julia Fischer (violin). Company Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Conductor David Zinman.

Bamberg Symphony Orchestra - T2058216347

The brilliantly virtuosic Arditti Quartet and a conductor and orchestra acclaimed for their interpretations of Mahler join forces in the UK premiere of Helmut Lachenmann's Tanzsuite mit Deutschlandlied. Previously unheard at the Proms, the blistered, metallic timbres and subtle textures of Lachenmann's ?musique concr?te instrumentale' unsettle and transfix, creating an abrasive yet alluring sound-world ideally suited to the Ardittis and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Written over two summers in 1901 and 1902, Mahler's Fifth Symphony concludes the programme, its famous Adagietto a love-letter to the composer's wife, Alma. Finish time: approx. 21:55Company Arditti Quartet. Company Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Jonathan Nott.

Strauss, Saariaho & Sibelius - T525221227

Making his Proms debut as the BBC Philharmonic's Chief Conductor, Juanjo Mena explores Strauss the impatient visionary, whose Also sprach Zarathustra was famously used on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Strauss's Four Last Songs exude a sense of calm resignation suffused with autumn light. After the interval, a major UK premiere from Kaija Saariaho, whose own music is lit by atmosphere and mood. Inspired by the autobiography of Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish film director, Laterna magica includes sections in which players whisper extracts over an instrumental murmur. To conclude, the hard-won luminescence of Sibelius's (unintended) symphonic farewell. Finish time: approx. 21:50Performer Anne Schwanewilms (soprano). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Juanjo Mena.

WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne - T0389261401

The WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cologne - the first of the season's visiting international orchestras - includes music by three of its compatriots. The sustained stillness of the Prelude to Wagner's Lohengrin (whose Act 3 Prelude appears in Prom 72) begins at the opposite extreme to the raging torrents and vivid mountain imagery conjured in Strauss's epic tone poem. Following her Proms debut in 2007, Munich-born Viviane Hagner returns as soloist in Mendelssohn's popular Violin Concerto, and the first premiere of the season comes from American Gunther Schuller, 85 this year - an equally celebrated figure in the big-band jazz and classical music worlds. Mahler: Symphony No 9 - T0774581541

Begun in the summer of 1909, Mahler's last completed symphony was written at a time of crisis, following the loss of a daughter, his forced resignation from the Vienna Court Opera, the diagnosis of his own fatal heart disease and the breakdown of his marriage. One of the world’s great Mahlerians, Bernard Haitink this year celebrates both his 80th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his UK debut. There will be no interval. Approx end time: 20:30Company London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Bernard Haitink.
