WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne - T0389261401

The WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cologne - the first of the season's visiting international orchestras - includes music by three of its compatriots. The sustained stillness of the Prelude to Wagner's Lohengrin (whose Act 3 Prelude appears in Prom 72) begins at the opposite extreme to the raging torrents and vivid mountain imagery conjured in Strauss's epic tone poem. Following her Proms debut in 2007, Munich-born Viviane Hagner returns as soloist in Mendelssohn's popular Violin Concerto, and the first premiere of the season comes from American Gunther Schuller, 85 this year - an equally celebrated figure in the big-band jazz and classical music worlds. Finish time: approx. 22:10Conductor Semyon Bychkov. Performer Viviane Hagner (violin).
