Prokofiev & Dutilleux - T2068433406Tonight's concert features two composers central to the musical lives of their respective countries. Birthday composer Henri Dutilleux is represented by the nocturnal imaginings of the violin concerto he wrote for Isaac Stern plus there's a chance to hear his birthday tribute to one of Prokofiev's most ardent supporters, the late Mstislav Rostropovich. Flanking these are Prokofiev's entrancing 'Classical' Symphony and his Fifth, a different, grander kind of utterance reflecting the soul of war-torn Moscow and the greatness of the human spirit. Finish time: approx. 21:40Performer Leonidas Kavakos (violin). Company London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Valery Gergiev.

Sydney Symphony - T571888597The Sydney Symphony returns to the Proms for the first time in 15 years, with its Music Director Vladimir Ashkenazy, a frequent guest here for more than 45 years. French-born pianist Hélène Grimaud, a Last Night soloist in 2008, plays the vivacious, blues-tinged concerto by Ravel. While the popular suite from Strauss's waltz-infused Der Rosenkavalier conjures up mid-18th-century Vienna, the intoxicating whirl of Scriabin's Symphony No. 3 relates to a cosmic dance between the human spirit and the universe. Finish time: 21:45 with intervalConductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. Performer Helene Grimaud (piano). Company Sydney Symphony.

London Symphony Orchestra - T1261096646Valery Gergiev returns at the helm of the LSO to conduct the most devastatingly bleak of Shostakovich's three 'war symphonies'. Composed at the time of the Battle of Stalingrad, the Eighth is paired with the belated UK premiere of Schnittke's early, Orff-influenced oratorio, an agonised expression of solidarity with the victims of the second atomic bomb, dropped on the city of Nagasaki the day before Japan's surrender. Heavily criticised by the Soviet Composers' Union, it only received its 1959 broadcast premiere (on Moscow World Service Radio) after Shostakovich's recommendation, and was not publicly performed until 2006. Approx finish time: 21:45. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3.Performer Elena Zhidkova (mezzo-soprano). Company London Symphony Chorus. Company London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Valery Gergiev.
