Stravinsky/Ravel & Tchaikovsky - T1944539181A great youth orchestra and a distinguished and much-loved conductor. The programme begins with Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements, partly inspired by newsreel footage of the Second World War. A long standing favourite of Sir Colin's, it is a work he first conducted at the Proms all of 50 years ago. The biggest piece is Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, in which the composer grapples with a malign Fate and, in his coruscating finale, makes use of a well-known Russian folk song. Before the interval, Ravel's exotic, ambiguous Shéhérazade is sung by Susan Graham, a supreme interpreter of the cycle. Finish time: approx. 21:00Performer Susan Graham (mezzo-soprano). Company Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Conductor Colin Davis (Sir).

Norwegian Chamber Orchestra - T0769520144The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra visits with joint Artistic Director Isabelle van Keulen and Principal Guest Director Leif Ove Andsnes, taking charge from their respective instruments. Two contrasting works by Mozart - the sparkling 'Haffner' Symphony and the more dramatic C minor Piano Concerto - frame Scandinavian pieces new and old: Grieg's beloved string-orchestra classic and Danish Bent Sørensen's new piano concerto, La mattina, which the composer regards as containing both his 'darkest and most profound' music.Conductor Per Kristian Skalstad. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment - T14404501The host of last year's Last Night, Sir Roger Norrington returns to conduct music by all four of this year's major anniversary composers. Purcell's music to Abdelazar gave Britten the theme he used, 250 years later, in his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (Prom 13), and American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato performs two Handel arias as well as Haydn's 'mad scene' for the distraught Berenice, who begs the gods to let her join her lover in death. Mendelssohn's evocative 'Scottish' symphony was conceived on the same 1829 holiday as his Hebrides overture (Prom 70). Approx finish time: 21:15. Live on BBC Radio 3 and recorded for broadcast on BBC Two on Sep 5.Performer Joyce DiDonato (mezzo-soprano). Company Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Conductor Roger Norrington (Sir).
