Rattle Conducts Mahler's Ninth - T01463614028

In Mahler's Ninth Symphony, the composer - who would not live to hear its premiere - bid ‘farewell to all whom he loved'. The words ‘'Leb' wohl!' ('farewell') are written onto the score itself, transformed into a theme that becomes the heartbeat of the whole work. It's a poignant choice for Sir Simon Rattle's final UK performance as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra. Death and life collide in a symphony haunted by loss but urgently clinging to dance and song. The finale, however, looks beyond, closing with a vision of distant hills where the sun is shining. Opening the Prom is Poulenc's choral masterpiece Figure humaine, a hymn to freedom from occupied France, performed by the BBC Singers.Company BBC Singers. Company London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Simon Rattle (Sir).

Former BBC Young Musician winner Benjamin Grosvenor may only be 26 but this exceptional pianist is an artist of startling emotional and technical maturity. Here he joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo as the soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 (sometimes known by the nickname ?Elvira Madigan'), with its trickling slow movement and good-humoured buffo levity. Bruckner's Fifth Symphony, with its astonishing fugal finale, offers a more serious counterpoint in the second half.Performer Benjamin Grosvenor (piano). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton - T01890723398

Is there a better-known or better-loved violin concerto than Mendelssohn's? Following her two solo Late Night Proms, and Proms Saturday Matinee appearance with Apollo's Fire, violinist Alina Ibragimova returns to perform this inventive and charming work, with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. They bring with them music by the young Norwegian Orjan Matre and a new work by Russian-British composer Alissa Firsova inspired by Norse mythology. This season's series of three Stravinsky ballets written for the Ballets Russes reaches its conclusion with The Rite of Spring, as ferocious and exhilarating a musical assualt now as it was at its notorious Paris premiere over a century ago. Holst - The Planets - T587698270

20th-century music takes three contrasting paths here in masterpieces by Holst, Schoenberg and Scriabin. Tuneful good humour and vivid characterisation see the century at its most approachable in Holst's well-loved The Planets. Scriabin's Prometheus is more eccentric - scored for piano, 'colour organ' and orchestra. This performance of it includes the optional part for choir and responds to the composer's imaginative ideas on colour. Premiered at the Proms in 1912, Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces take tonality to the limit, anticipating the composer's later development of serialism. Finish time approx. 21:35Performer Alexander Toradze. Company London Philharmonic Choir. Company London Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Vladimir Jurowski.

Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester - T1813770803

Founded by Claudio Abbado in 1986, the pan-European Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester remains one of the most musically exciting and technically polished youth orchestras in the world. Tonight, Philippe Jordan directs the GMJO in the overture to Wagner's Rienzi and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, written in an atmosphere of intense scrutiny and artistic repression, after the public denouncement of his opera The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Ravel's jazz-inflected Piano Concerto in G major completes the programme, with the flamboyant French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet as the soloist. Strauss & Mahler - T42520066

For his second Prom this season, Semyon Bychkov conducts one of Mahler's most perfectly realised works, 'the only sixth, despite the "Pastoral" ', in the words of Alban Berg. This is music of exceptional range and power, whose fateful hammer-blows seem to portend the crises in Mahler's own life and the wider world. The curtain-raiser is a mini-concerto with echoes of Brahms and Liszt, especially in its treatment of the piano. Kirill Gerstein, an exceptional artist with roots in jazz as well as the classics, makes his first Proms appearance in the main hall. Finish time: appox. 21:50Performer Kirill Gerstein (piano). Minnesota Orchestra - T0662137047

Osmo Vänskä, whose enthusiastic following in the UK dates from his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1996-2002), returns for two Proms with the Minnesota Orchestra, which has seen a revival under his music directorship since 2003. Tonight the cinematic incidental music imagined by anniversary composer Samuel Barber for a scene from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound contrasts with the expansive splendour of Bruckner's 'Romantic' Symphony. Young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein makes her Proms debut in the first of Shostakovich's two concertos honed around the skill and and stamina of the great Mstislav Rostropovich. Staatskapelle Dresden - T0462749622

Following last night's depiction of domestic life in the Strauss household, we continue with his mountain-inspired final tone-poem, performed by the orchestra to which it was dedicated (and which premiered no fewer than nine of his 15 operas) under its current Chief Conductor, Fabio Luisi, here making his Proms debut. Ever a favourite with Proms audiences, Lang Lang returns to perform Chopin's brilliantly virtuosic, Romantically poetic and mazurka-capped F minor Concerto. And the evening opens with a revised, expanded version of a 2006 work by British-born, Berlin-based Rebecca Saunders. Approx finish time: 22:15.
