Anders Hillborg/Mozart & Beethoven - T01817369393Premiered earlier this year by David Zinman and the Berlin Philharmonic, Anders Hillborg's Cold Heat leavens high-art finesse with the rampaging pulse and flow of street music. Quite a contrast with the autumnal poise of Mozart's final piano concerto, tonight featuring Maria Joao Pires, whose Late Night Chopin recital was a highlight of last year's Proms. After the interval, one of the great pinnacles of Western art music, a work inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution. Beethoven famously struck out the dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte when the latter declared himself Emperor but the heroic musical drama of the 'Eroica' stands for all time. Finish time: approx. 21:50Performer Maria Joao Pires (piano). Company Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Conductor David Zinman.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T0611302679Our survey of Stravinsky's ballets ends with the dazzling set of 12 dances for 12 dancers that the septuagenarian composer based on material taken from a 17th-century dance manual but re-energised through his own unique 20th-century viewpoint. To conclude our series of Tchaikovsky's concertante works, Stephen Hough signs off his one-man piano marathon with the curiously neglected Concert Fantasia, while cellist Steven Isserlis returns (after making chamber music in Monday's PCM 6) to relish the 18th-century charms of the 'Rococo' Variations. And the BBC SO's Principal Guest Conductor, David Robertson, ends the concert with Tchaikovsky's Dantesque tale of forbidden love and eternal punishment. Approx finish time: 21:20. Broadcast at 19:30 on BBC Four and live on BBC Radio 3.Performer Stephen Hough (piano). Performer Steven Isserlis (cello). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor David Robertson.
