Fitkin & Beethoven - T33943811

Featured artist Yo-Yo Ma takes centre stage with a new work conceived especially for him by a composer who prizes clarity and a straightforward approach. After the interval, the BBC SO's Principal Guest Conductor, David Robertson, directs the traditional annual Proms performance of Beethoven's Ninth, perhaps the richest, most provocative statement in the symphonic canon. An impressive team of soloists joins the BBC Symphony Chorus to project the finale's optimistic vision of hard-won triumph over adversity. Finish time: approx 21:45Performer Yo Yo Ma (cello). Performer Christine Brewer (soprano). Performer Karen Cargill (mezzo-soprano). Performer Toby Spence (tenor). Performer Iain Paterson (bass-baritone). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Hansel and Gretel - T1204558672

Glyndebourne Festival Opera makes its annual Proms visit with Laurent Pelly's semi-staged production of Humperdinck's glorious confection combining a popular Brothers Grimm fairy tale with Wagnerian music-drama. Robin Ticciati, former Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour and now Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, makes his Proms debut, leading a strong cast led by Alice Coote and Lydia Teuscher, while Austrian tenor Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke uproariously plays the wicked Witch in drag. Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - T0923291965

Both Sibelius and Duparc stopped composing decades before their deaths - three in the Finn's case, five in the Frenchman's. The seven symphonies Sibelius left, however, securely place him among the greatest symphonists of the 20th century. Duparc left just 13 songs, yet each is a gem of textual subtlety and melodic inspiration; lustrous-toned Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená sings her own selection. Ravel's pastoral ballet Daphnis et Chloé - commissioned by Diaghilev in 1909, the year he met Stravinsky - was based on an ancient erotic novel; the Second Suite begins with a sunrise and ends in an orgy. Approx finish time: 21:00. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.Performer Magdalena Kozena (mezzo-soprano). Company Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Conductor Mariss Jansons.
