Among the many achievements of Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra has been the introduction of new types of non-standard concert: one-hour family 'cocoa concerts' for young children, 'one forint concerts' where the conductor can reach out and talk to a larger crowd, and 'surprise' concerts where the programme is not announced. Tonight the audience will be asked to choose what they would like to hear played from the range of possible options in the orchestra's capacious music library. Finish time: approx. 223:00. Early Opera Company and its founder-conductor celebrate the anniversaries of three composers, all born in 1710: J. S. Bach's sadly wayward eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann (see Proms Chamber Music 4); the tragically short-lived Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, whose touchingly lyrical meditation on the sufferings of Christ's mother at the foot of the Cross has been winning new audiences; and the London-born Thomas Arne, once the leading British composer of his day, now known mostly as the man who wrote Rule, Britannia! Ibert's riotous 1956 Bacchanale was commissioned for the 10th anniversary of the BBC's Third Programme, forerunner of today's Radio 3. Tennis is only one of the 'games' played in Debussy's 1913 ballet, premiered by the Ballets Russes just two weeks before Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (Prom 38). Our multiple pianos focus continues with works by Mozart and Zimmermann - the latter of which quotes from both Jeux and Mozart's C major Concerto, K467. And the LPO, under its brilliant Principal Conductor, concludes with Brahms's hard-won First Symphony, composed under the burdensome shadow of Beethoven. Approx finish time: 19:00.
