Beethoven - Missa Solemnis - T02118085019Sir Colin Davis tackles a work whose uncompromising nature makes it as great a challenge as anything in the choral repertoire, whether you regard it as a statement of the composer's belief in the spiritual potential of man or his faith in a supreme being. 'A musician must make affirmations,' says Davis. 'If a musician cannot believe in music as a universal ideal, what is he left with? We may be encircled by gloom but music gives us a chance to throw what Meredith calls "that faint thin line upon the shore". ... Beethoven is a man at war with himself but a man who is determined to win.' Finish time: approx. 20:40. There will be no intervalPerformer Carmen Giannattasio (soprano). Last Night of the Proms 1910 - T0324129576To open our day long tribute to Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood, we present his own Last Night programme from a century ago - so producing the first Proms season ever to feature two Last Nights. While this parade of short popular classics truly recalls Promenade concerts of another age, we also continue Wood's commitment to new works - what Wood called his 'novelties'. So one short cello piece from the original 1910 programme is this afternoon replaced by a brand-new work, based on a movement from the unfinished Cello Concerto by Vaughan Williams. Finish time: approx. 18:00Conductor Paul Daniel. Performer Jennifer Larmore (mezzo-soprano). Performer Sergei Leiferkus (baritone). Performer Steven Isserlis (cello). BBC National Orchestra of Wales - T1612000153Inspired by a comic strip about a frisky young lady-fox, Janácek's forest opera The Cunning Little Vixen is a heart-warming humanist hymn to nature's eternal cycle of life and death. Marking John McCabe's 70th birthday, the programme includes his Horn Concerto, which combines urban jazz with the sounds of the equatorial rainforests. The major musical memento of Dvorák's directorship of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, his Ninth Symphony was partly inspired by the scene of Minnehaha's forest funeral in Longfellow's Hiawatha but also exudes nostalgia for his - and the Vixen's - native Bohemian woods and fields. Approx finish time: 21:05. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.Performer David Pyatt (horn). Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conductor Jac van Steen. | |
