Tribute to Stan Kenton - T01196643292

Enjoy a late-night centenary tribute to Stan Kenton, whose orchestra, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, was the biggest jazz attraction in the world, embracing in its ranks many soloists and arrangers who went on to have brilliant careers of their own. One of the most creative of all bandleaders, Kenton's penchant for complex and highly structured work could run counter to the expectations of critics and audiences alike. Still, he kept on moving between dissonance and convention, and tonight the BBC Big Band celebrates his legacy, including some of his classical arrangements, with guest vocalist Claire Martin. Finish time: approx 23:30. There will be no intervalPerformer Claire Martin (vocalist). Company BBC Big Band. Conductor Jiggs Whigham.

Orchestre National de France - T0303679229

In its first visit to the UK since Daniele Gatti became Music Director, the Orchestre National de France presents three great works linked to France and its capital city. Dating from a decade before his symphony of seascapes, La mer, Debussy's poetic Prélude made its composer's name when it was premiered in 1894, and created controversy when Nijinsky danced his erotic choreography of it for the Ballets Russes in 1912. A year later the Paris premiere of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring prompted an even more sensational succès de scandale for Diaghilev's company, causing the most famous riot in musical history. Finish time: approx. 21:15 with intervalConductor Daniele Gatti. Company Orchestre National de France.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies - T0382370177

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has written choral works throughout his career. To celebrate his 75th birthday today, the BBC Singers and their Chief Conductor David Hill devote their Late Night Prom exclusively to his music. The virtuosic and technically challenging Westerlings, premiered by the BBC Singers in 1977, consists of four songs to texts by the Orcadian poet George Mackay Brown, interspersed with wordless seascapes and capped by a concluding prayer in Old Norse, the ancient language of Sir Peter's adopted Orkney home. Also setting texts by Brown, Solstice of Light is a major cantata with organ, charting the whole history of the Orkneys and ending in an invocation to St Magnus, the islands' patron saint. Approx finish time: 23:15. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3. There will be no interval.
