Philadelphia Orchestra & Janine Jansen - T01208173429One of the world's great orchestras comes to the Proms with a programme of familiar classics that takes in Rachmaninov's bracing swansong, written for Philadelphia. A regular visitor in recent years, Janine Jansen joins the orchestra for the ever-popular Tchaikovsky concerto she recorded recently in fresh and unashamedly romantic style. These works are bookended by Sibelius's patriotic rallying cry and Ravel's apotheosis of the waltz, a piece whose unstoppable whirling may have been intended as a metaphor for the fate of European civilisation. Finish time: approx. 21:50Performer Janine Jansen (violin). Company Philadelphia Orchestra. Conductor Charles Dutoit.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T02143975178Bruckner, like his hero Wagner, composed on a vast scale. In his third Prom of the season, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Chief Conductor, Jiri Belohlávek, pairs the dashing festive prelude from Act 3 of Wagner's 'swan knight' romance with the most overarching and open-hearted of Bruckner's nine symphonies - a work whose slow movement was composed in the shadow of Wagner's death and enshrines Bruckner's musical memorial to the man he revered as the 'Master'. Always a composer of vivid and funky surprises, Tansy Davies promises in her new work to take us on a journey through the Tarot pack. Finish time: approx. 21:00Conductor Jiri Belohlavek. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra.

BBC Symphony Orchestra - T0440339294We end our bicentenary salute to Mendelssohn with the magical A Midsummer Night's Dream overture that he wrote at the age of only 17, coupled with extracts from his later incidental music to Shakespeare's play. In Augusta Read Thomas's new Violin Concerto, the soloist takes the role of the 'juggler', rhapsodising a path through a pointillistic 'paradise' of bell sounds. And, to conclude, the BBC SO's Chief Conductor, Jirí Belohlávek, takes the orchestra on a Beethovenian tour of the Austrian countryside. Approx finish time: 20:45. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.
